Chapter Twenty-Two

Like a gunfighter at high noon, the mystdrakon hesitated, crouched and ready to fire. Janelle froze, peripherally aware that Liam and Jae-Yong had done the same. The mystdrakon was probably deciding which one of them would have their heart ripped out. The impact alone would kill any one of them, hardened bones and enhancements meaningless against its raw power.

If this was the end, she would have liked to have last words. But that was the way of her profession, at least the hunter part of it. Most didn't get that luxury unless they did as Cassius and got the hell out. How could she save anyone with everything she'd learned at Aura Healers if she were dead?

When the mystdrakon blurred forward, she flinched. She thought she was dead. She'd seen the moment of realization in emergency room patients. The switch of alive to dead in their eyes. For a heartbeat, she was certain that's what had happened to her. The mystdrakon had sped through her chest, and her mind was catching up to her death.

But the creature had gone past. She looked to her right to see Liam patting his chest, eyes wide. The three of them turned to find the manticore that had been chasing them obliterated from impact. The mystdrakon feasted on the bloody mess, its powerful jaws ripping at the innards of the manticore.

"Let's, uhm, go around."

They hopped the fence to circle back to the dome-by-dome search. The artellae dome had wide-open doors. Before they stepped inside, Liam squinted at the sky. "More helicopters incoming."

Janelle took his word for it, heading into the dome. The gate into the enclosure was wide open, but a quick visual search showed the artellae, living stick creatures as tall as her waist, continued to mill around the hanging tree at the center of the grassland space.

"This dome has always been kinda boring in my opinion," said Jae-Yong, his lips curled downward. "They're only dangerous if you're asleep in a field and like twenty or thirty of them sneak up on you."

"Boring is my jam right now," said Janelle. "I'm still a little shook from the mystdrakon."

The looks in her friends' eyes said they felt the same way. A quick circuit through the dome proved it as empty as JY predicted, and they headed to the next dome along the eastern side of the park: the rockatans.

The banner over the dome showed bipedal, hairy creatures that if she squinted could have been orangutans. The big difference being that rockatans could push their powerful hands through stone and rip out chunks. A lot of strange supernatural creatures had been created by wizards, and the rockatans were no exception. They'd been made by a wizard who ran a valuable gemstone mine, but had eventually turned on him.

The hubris of the powerful knew no bounds. Rockatans ate regular food, but enjoyed dining on minerals they carved out of the rocks with their own hands.

"They're not naturally dangerous, but if you get in their way,
